Privacy policy

Swear Jar has no server and no accounts of its own. Your data stays in your iCloud account and on your devices. The developer can't see it.

What the app stores

In your private iCloud storage and on your devices:

  • Your display name and avatar, which can be a photo.
  • Your jars: names, rates, currencies and members.
  • Ledger entries: slips, payments, pot spending, disputes, closeouts and their notes.

Shared jars are shared with their members only.

What is public

Two things are kept in Apple's public iCloud database, readable by anyone with the address, including the developer.

Join codes

Anyone with a join code can read its jar's name, rate, creator's display name and invitation link, and nothing else. Owners can close a jar's code.

Published jars

Off unless a jar's owner turns it on. Anyone with the link can read:

  • The jar's name, rate, currency, pot, amount owed and last closeout date.
  • Each member's display name, emoji, slip count, and what they've been charged, paid and owe.
  • The 100 most recent entries: what, who, how much and when.

Never published: notes, dispute reasons, payment methods, what the pot was spent on, photos, or anything identifying an Apple Account.

Turning publishing off deletes the copy and breaks every link to it. It does not close the join code.

The web app

  • You sign in on Apple's page. Swear Jar never sees your password or email.
  • A name from Apple is only suggested as your display name.
  • Apple sets a cookie to keep you signed in.
  • A copy of your jars is kept in your browser's storage and never leaves it.
  • The site's server never receives your jars or join codes.

What is not collected

  • No analytics, telemetry or crash reports.
  • No ads or advertising identifiers.
  • No third-party SDKs.
  • No location, contacts, calendars, health or browsing data.

Photos and contacts

The app sees only the photos and contacts you pick. Only a small cropped avatar is shared; the original photo stays on your device.

Purchases

Handled by Apple. The app never sees your payment details.

Children

Swear Jar is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect their information.

Deleting your data

The developer holds nothing to delete. You can:

  • Archive or retire a jar to hide it and keep its history.
  • Delete the app to remove its data from that device.
  • Delete the app's iCloud data in Settings to remove it from all your devices.
  • Turn publishing off to delete a jar's published copy.
  • Leave a jar you joined to be removed from its standings. The jar stays with its creator.
  • Clear this site's data in your browser to remove the web app's copy.

Changes

Changes to this policy update the date above.
